Conspiracies

There’s a lot of anime out there both good and bad. I’ve watched quite a bit of it but every now and then a good, or in this case, great show passed me by for a while…

Welcome to the NHK

I’ve always been told to watch this one but I never really found the motivation or the time to devote myself to it but this week I had some vacation time and the wait for new episodes for this seasons show’s were really starting to get to me so I decided to kick back and prepare myself for something that would apparently blow my mind.

And oh how right they are. I watched the whole series from start to finish in a single night. My mind was not amazed but more like completely destroyed. The plot summery was a rather interesting one;

Satou Tatsuhiro, a 22 year old young man, is a NEET (Not in Employment, Education, or Training) and a hikikomori (meaning acute social withdrawal). He believes everything around him is a conspiracy, including the reason why many people, himself included, become hikikomori. Due to this, Satou creates a strange conspiracy theory which includes the Nihon Hikikomori Kyōkai (NHK), a secret organization with the intention of producing a hikikomori filled world. Satou intends to break free from the NHK’s clutches, but cannot, since he finds it too frightening to go outdoors by himself; that is, until he meets Misaki Nakahara, who selects Satou for her “project” that she claims will cure him of his hikikomori ways.

So right off the bat you have a psychological thriller which I absolutely love mind games. Something that also stuck out to me was the theme of the series: dark comedy

Yes.

I thought to myself, as I was already starting episode 1. Now the two main characters, Sato and Misaki are, at first glance, unlikable. Which sounds weird but we have to remind ourselves that it takes an episode or two to build up characters and that’s exactly what happened. Sato is delusional and pathetic excuse for a human being, while Misaki is the ray of sun shine on a dark rainy day which is exactly what Sato comes to see her as. His savior from paranoia that has kept him locked in his room for 4 years.

The really scary thing about this show that I think hit me the most was the fact that it touches on a lot of real points at times that can really get to you… but I suppose that’s the point of a mind game isn’t it? As for the ending, in short I don’t think I’ve laughed that hard in awhile.

The show is an A+ would watch again type show that you recommend to everyone and I wish I had watched it sooner rather than pushing it off.

Spring 2010

Spring 2010

So as you know the Spring 2010 season is currently airing. I have decided to watch many of the things from this season as I normally do so instead of doing 1 post per show I will just do a quick summary of each here and now. So here we go: *Beware of Wall o Text* Look to italics for a one sentence summary.

Yutori-chan – This is a surprising little anime. Its distributed by email and could be akin to Nyoron Churuya-san but in 2D. I am actually enjoying this for what it is, a bunch of 2-4 minute gags, but beyond that it lacks all substance. Nothing surprising though considering it.

Heroman – I always love the hero genres. Probably my favourite behind maids and I have to say that this doesn’t disappoint. Set in West Coast USA its about a boy who, living with his grandma, bullied at school and has to work all the time, creates his own superhero. Storyline is pretty standard but if you like the realms of Spiderman and that then this isn’t much different. Characters are good, I can really relate. Animation and soundtrack are epic. Its got a sort of American comic book style to it which suits the series well. Anyone that loves a good hero should watch this.

Shin Koihime Musou (Otome Tairen) – Season 3 of the Koihime Musou series. Not much has changed really. If you have seen the first 2 seasons then you are probably watching this. If not then I advise you to go download them now. This is ecchi at its best. Very few shows have been able to pull off ecchi as well as this series. Definitely one of my favourites.

B Gata H Kei – I really enjoy this series actually. Tis about a girl that wants to have 100 sex partners but is yet to even kiss a boy. I suppose if I were to give you a genre I would say Romance/Ecchi. The main character ends up focusing on one guy and its really about her trying to have sex with him but getting embarrassed at the last minute and running home scared. Characters are enjoyable, animation is beautiful, storyline is reasonable, soundtrack… I am yet to listen to the soundtrack in great detail so meh.

Kaichou wa Maid-sama – Perfection in an anime I think. My favourite genre of maids and romance combined with a tsundere lead and a cool boy partner. Its everything I could ever want from an anime plus more. Basically story is that student president thinks all guys are disgusting but works as a maid cafe because she needs the money. She probably hates them because of her father leaving them or something I haven’t watched far enough in yet but when one of the most popular boys in school finds out she is a maid, comedy ensues. Storyline is excellent, Characters are lovable, animation is beautiful, soundtrack… I should listen to the soundtracks more but I love the OP and ED so close enough.

Angel Beats - High hopes for this one. I have seen Clannad and Kanon(2006) already and loved them both. Air is still on download so I eagerly await another Key presentation. Its alittle slow to start I think however in true Key style I know its going to make me cry at least 3 times before the end. Apparently its about a group fighting God so we will see where it takes us. So far I like the style that it is done in. Characters are also lovable. Soundtrack is good and story has potential. I have only watched 2 episodes but the anime definitely has potential.

Ichiban Ushiro no Dai Maou – I am actually enjoying this series. Have to see the uncensored version but unlike Queen’s Blade or KissXSis it doesn’t focus on nudity or the like but simply fan service.  Anime is about a guy who wants to be a high priest (the pinnacle of a good mage) but upon entering his high school is given the future job of ‘Demon King’. Apparently the job predictor has never been wrong so everyone in the school is now afraid of him but he just wants to be friends. Characters are good though many seem screwed in the head. Storyline has potential but they seem to be rushing it to me. They aren’t explaining enough. Animation is actually very good. Soundtrack is ok. Overall this anime is worth the watch I think. Some nice fighting in it and a bit of uncensored ecchi so well done.

Giant Killing – Hmmmm… a sports anime. I am not a fan of these however in saying that I will still watch them. I have to say though that this is actually really interesting. A manager comes back to his old club after leaving them for better fortunes. Everyone hates him however he has the ability to coach this old team back up to the top. Characters are a little weird but good. Animation is ok. Storyline seems like your standard Zero to Hero type so I will give it merits for that. Soundtrack… again I need to listen to it more. OP and ED are nice though.

Working! – This is a fun little anime. If I had to relate it to anything I would say Lucky Star maybe? Its got a sort of skit style to it. Its the story of working in a cafe. Not much to it. Characters are all good except for the main guy I think. Soundtrack is good. Storyline is non existant but its a skit style so not much to worry over there. Animation is rather good I think. Not much else to say really.

Hakuouki: Shinsengumi Kitan – This one isn’t too bad. I get the feeling of a reverse harem though which isn’t bad but since the anime is not a love based thing then I am not liking it for doing so. In saying that though on what it is it isn’t bad. Animation is very good I think. Character are well done. Storyline is not evident to any great degree, seems more like shorts at the moment, however it will come. Soundtrack is meh I guess. Its not great but not bad. This anime could be epic however at the moment its lack of a major storyline is what’s bringing it down. I have hope for it though.

Hime Chen! Otogi Chikku Idol Lilpri – This show is CUTE! I wasn’t sure about this one but I have come to enjoy it actually. The three mains remind me of the Powerpuff girls who will always have a place in my heart. They sing, they dance, this anime is just all over cute. The storyline is cliche. Animation is reasonably good. They try to include some 3D as well. Not sure on that but it seems to work. Soundtrack is awesome and characters are CUTE!! I wuv them dearly. Basically 3 girls sing to save Fairytale land. You get it? Got it? Good!

Senko no Night Raid – This one looked like a little mafia story from what I saw. It wasn’t but is still good I think. Think olden day GitS and you get an idea. They each how powers that make them good as part of a team but probably pants by themselves. Still waiting on a major story but it should be good. Characters are well done. Soundtrack is ok. Animation is good. I love the teleporting. Storyline has potential.

Mayoi Neko Overun! – Omg tsundere lead is so cute. Knee socks and all she is close to perfect. From what I gather main guy and his sister run a bakery. Childhood tsundere friend lives with them as well. Bakery is average but has a lot of cats. Then the sister brings home a big cat. Cue harem ecchi comedy. Animation good, Storyline good though its probably going to get bigger, characters are awesome especially the tsundere friend. Soundtrack is ok.

RAINBOW Seven guys band together to survive their days in a reformatory. Each has their different reasons for being there and are good in different areas. Will be interesting to see where this goes. Animation is reasonably good. You get the feel of a dark time. Characters are good. You can tell that the guards are cruel and insane. Soundtrack is good. Storyline is going to be very good from the looks of it.

K-on!! – Sequel to K-on! (notice the exclaimation marks). More of the same from season 1. Moeblobs play music. Animation is better. Storyline is the same. Soundtracks are awesome. Characters are moe. I would suggest that you watch season 1 if you have seen neither. K-on is almost staple now.

KissXSis – The TV series of the OVA. I loved the OVA and the series is just more of the same but they take it further. This anime is ecchi extreme for much of it. I hope the guy gets the harem in the end because lord knows that I can’t pick between these two at the moment. Animation, very good. Storyline, what? Its just twins trying to seduce their younger brother. Characters, wuvable. Though the guy is kind of a dick though. Soundtrack, I like it so meh.

.

Thats it. Thanks for reading the wall o text if you did. Other shows that I am yet to watch but interested in include: Bakugan: New Vestoria, Ikkitousen Xtreme Xecutor, Ookiku Furikabette S2, Metal Fight Beyblade, Arakawa under the Bridge and Uragiri wa Boku no Namae wo Shitte Iru.

Till again. Enjoy.

Enzedder.

Rainbow

Romances and cute puppy dogs are all fine and dandy, in fact love/romances and slice of life are probably my favorite anime genre in the world but every now and then, I’m sure some of you other hopeless romantics will agree with me, you need a little bit of action and bromance to spice things up a little, get the blood flowing to pump yourself up for an event filled day. So here’s a look at a potentially awesome show for the Spring: Rainbow (Nisha Rokubō no Shichinin)

Seven teenagers in 1955 have to learn to live together in the same hold in the reformatory of Shio. Confined in a hall where suffering and humiliation are daily, they are waiting for a ray of hope in a dark, incarcerating world. The story follows their life together and how they move on afterwards.

When I first saw the Spring listings this wasn’t on there so I didn’t even know about it until shortly before its first release. Needless to say I was instantly captured by the opening theme: Were not alone by Coldrain

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQ200EgX6jA

Scremo really isn’t my thing but this felt different for some reason and can have you rockin’ out to it and the rest of the sound track was pretty amazing overall so the OST will be a no brainer.

After the first episode I was in awe. The characters are all unique in their own fashion, all with their own back stories and looks but probably my favorite like other fans of this series is the main man of action, Sakuragi aka “Bro”. Just a few words can only discribe him; total badass from head to toe of pure amazing-ness. The other characters, specifically Minakami “Mario” are all pretty awesome and Madhouse has done a fantastic job of setting the foundation for a good story. So with 2 episodes down now we can only hope the series stays good throughout the season.

An Apology ~ Angel Beats Revised

Given that I had already done a first impressions review on Angel Beats I wasn’t really planning on writing anything for this anime until the end of the season, or at least half way through. That was before I watched the third episode.

Everything has really started to fall into place with the third week’s installment of this series. I would also like to say that I graciously take back everything bad that I’ve said about it having minor flaws. Because from this point forward, this show has none.
The episode starts out a little iffy with the introduction of even more characters (if that can be possible, although one of them I was expecting) but quickly recovers from there. It neatly breaks out of the molding the intro had first imposed on this show for me and rolls it all into a very serious and heart string twanging rock concert that actually feels complete and wholly necessary. Having not watched any of Key’s previous shows before I will now understand when someone talks about his writing being so good and that it has a tendency to change the mood of a series really fast, cause damn can he change it really fast!

Koreans invade vegas!

FLCL

Miki here, testing a new iPhone app to blog when I’m not at a PC. Using blogger lite means no image posting, etc. Sorry people but until I’m home to edit there wont be pictures. If you see a blank post with a similar title sorry about that. xP

Yesterday at the Bellagio in Vegas I witnessed something I never expected and found quite funny. Imagine 30 or more Asian girls in their school uniforms running past you and behind them a huge group of Asian guys also in uniform running after them. It seemed endless until I found one of the chubbier ones lagging behind the others and said something in Japanese, he stood there for a moment and said something back in Korean, fail right? Luckily another one of his classmates ran by. After that everywhere i looked…. Korean, Korean, Korean. I guess its because its cheap for them. .shrugs.

Warm weather, new shows!

With Spring now in full swing we find ourselves looking up some new shows that maybe we haven’t heard of, so lets take a look at one of the upcoming series that I think will be pretty good as well as list of some of the others to keep your eye’s on;

Class President is a Maid!

Misaki Ayuzawa is the first female student council president at a once all boys school turned co-ed. She rules the school with strict discipline demeanor. But she has a secret, she works at a maid cafe due to her families circumstances. One day the popular A student and notorious heart breaker Takumi Usui finds out her secret and makes a deal with her to keep it hush from the school in exchange for spending some time with him.

2 flags are raised about this short little synopsis; the first being romantic comedy which is already 10/10 in my book and the second being the heroine Misaki isn’t to bad to look at if you don’t mind me saying. After watching the first episode some will probably get turned off to the somewhat over the top expressions but its part of the series’ charm. When it comes to me though and I’m sure a few others, the main male character is someone who you hate with every fiber of your being… but this time that isn’t the case. Usui is  a cool and actual likable male lead! Which I find to be rare in most romances since they always have us sympathizing with the girl leads so trust me when I say that Usui is amazing (and hilarious with his constant toying of Misaki). So far we’re 2 episodes in and I think it will be a wonderful series to keep up with.

Along with a maid class president we have a couple others that might hold your attention:

K-On 2
Angel Beats!
Arakawa Under The Bridge
Giant Killing
Hero Man
B Gata H Kei
Ichiban Ushiro no Daimaou
Stray Cats Overrun!
Working!!
Ikkitousen: Xtreme Xecutor

So here’s to hoping that Spring season of anime won’t be a let down. Enjoy the good weather and let’s see what the future holds for us!

Spring Season First Impressions – Angel Beats

The "Angel" of Death

This season it seems as if I’m watching a lot more ongoing shows than previous seasons, and who can blame me? A couple of promising new eye candies to savor as well as the next installments for two anime series (one being K-ON!)? Yes please!

The first show I’ll be reviewing is Angel Beats. It’s two episodes in and already it has all the spunk and excitement of a jack russell terrier combined with the sheer power and weight of a ST. Bernard. It also doesn’t waste any time throwing you right in the middle of the action (in fact it waits all of 25 seconds before it’s up and running) as the main character Otonashi finds himself violently thrown in (quite literally) with a various group of high school students rebelling against God in what appears to be some sort of high school themed purgatory. At first glance there are so many great things about this series that you can’t help but be visually stunned by what’s going on. Then you take a second glance and you start noticing the small crinkles in this otherwise picture perfect series. The lead female characters, Yuri and Tenshi are so dependent on their own archetypes in the first episode you can’t help but picture the faces of Haruhi and Nagato copy pasted in their place. You have an over exuberant female, leader of her own personal eccentric organization known as the SOS Brigade SSS Battlefront and the apathetic android girl with less emotion than a household toaster. The whole thing feels like you’ve watched it somewhere before but you can’t quite put your finger on exactly where… oh yeah that’s right. Every other anime Kyoto has ever released.

Plot progression in the first episode is not without its faults ether as everything seems a little helter skelter, like they’re trying to explain an entire epic prequel in 20 minutes while keeping you distracted with guns, girls, and pretty flashing lights. They try cramming so much intro dialogue, action, and band jamming awesomeness that everything about the first episode starts to smack of somebody in the storyboard department who’s trying just a little too hard (well this is Key we’re talking about…). Despite these small critiques as long as you come across this little gem already knowing the premise and not expecting any real development in the first episode than you won’t find this a problem.  This does however bring me to the one big critique, which is that it has no idea what the term ‘Habeas corpus’ means. If you’re going to write a story about the afterlife where the characters are fighting to retain their humanity and avoid fading away into the aether than wouldn’t it be a good idea to actually show me somebody who’s actually fading away?  The anime acts as if you are supposed to take in everything they tell you about the setting at face value while you’re speeding along at 60 miles an hour. There is so much suspension of reality going on that it tends to get in the way of the actual immersion for me. Although perhaps they’re doing this purposefully to get you to sympathize with Otonashi’s dilemma of getting dumped in a strange world he doesn’t know or any memories of his past.  Perhaps there’s even a reason for this whole ‘leading around by the nose’ thing that will become apparent later on, or maybe I’m just over analyzing this one. For now it just remains a minor annoyance.

Some of these critiques are redeemed later on in the second episode when the characters start to feel a little fleshier and everyone gets a little more screen time than the basic exchange of names. If the first episode was your typical over amped introduction (complete with music ensemble) than the second episode is your typical ‘getting to know the characters’ act where everyone in the SOS Brigade SSS gang (stop that!) gets a little bit of screen time to themselves to give you a real sense of who they actually are. It also introduces a little bit of real back-story on Yuri’s part and gives you a great little window into her motives.

This is definitely a show that won’t leave you bored at any moment the second you start watching, With it’s balanced mix of comedy, action, and compelling premise i dare you to not like this one. I’ve found Angel Beats to be the most promising new show this season and I certainly look forward to religiously watching this each week.

The Wallflower

Let us kick things off with a series that I recently picked up entitled The Wallflower released in ’07. Now let me just put this out there, I’m not one for reverse/male harems but I did remember that I really enjoyed Ouran High School Host Club so I figured I would give this one a try to be fair at least. That and it was a request that I watch it so I couldn’t turn it down. The plot is pretty simple…

Kyouhei, Ranmaru, Takenaga, and Yukinojou are beautiful, handsome, young men living in a huge mansion. One day, their landlord, whom they call “Auntie”, asks them a favor: to make her niece, Sunako, who’s going to be living with them, into a respectable young lady. She agrees to make their living expenses free of charge if they succeed, but if they fail, she’ll triple their rent. Due to their confidence in knowing how to deal with women, they agree, but once they meet Sunako, they begin to realize that their lovely living arrangements may soon be in jeopardy.

I thought to myself “Alright its go time!” So I did and I gotta say that I am very happy that I decided to give this anime a chance since it was easily worth it at the end. Comedy wise it’s definitely on par with Ouran and it has its serious moments as well as a brilliant touch of romance so this formula worked well for show. I was laughing though just about every episode and the main character Sunako is so lovable and adorable even if she is a dark, evil and twisted figure; she will grow on you after a little while and you start to see her good sides. However there are always bad sides to everything good. My only gripe about this show is that one of the main male characters, specifically Yuki Toyama, is almost like a girl himself (besides being drawn and portrayed as one) and in fact he’s always the one who has to dress in drag whenever the gang needs to change their appearance… however those events always end in hilarity so I’ll let it slide.

Overall I give the show a solid 9/10. The reason it got a -1 is because the series remains unfinished and is continued in the manga but I still enjoyed it from start to end and it’s a very good watch and highly recommended for anyone who loves high school comedic romances.

Summer Wars

Summer Wars

“When timid eleventh-grader and math genius Kenji Koiso is asked by older student and secret crush Natsuki to come with her to her family’s Nagano home for a summer job, he agrees without hesitation. Natsuki’s family, the Jinnouchi clan, dates back to the Muromachi era, and they’ve all come together to celebrate the 90th birthday of the spunky matriarch of the family, Sakae. That’s when Kenji discovers his “summer job” is to pretend to be Natsuki’s fiancé and dance with her at the birthday celebration. As Kenji attempts to keep up with Natsuki’s act around her family, he receives a strange math problem on his cell phone which, being a math genius, he can’t resist solving. As it turns out, the solution to the mysterious equation causes a hijacking of the social networking site through which most of the world’s social and business traffic flows.”

So Summer Wars…

This has been out a while now but I was yet to watch it till a few days ago (waiting for BD and for time to watch). Anyway, I have to say… its epic.

This movie created by the director of ‘The Girl Who Leap Through Time’ and its evident from the very beginning.  Storyline progression is relatively similar and the is art style too. The facial expressions of both movies are some of my favourites.

The characters are awesome with the family reunion consisting of all your stereotypical types of people from over the top uncles to the black sheep child to even the Grandmother herself. Working well together the characters portray a real sense of family and of a bustling work group where everyone does what they can for the group. I always love those set ups. ^_^

There is romance in it but it often takes a backseat to the current problem, the hijacking of Oz (The social networking site) and the preparations for the Grandmother’s birthday which she doesn’t seem too fussed about. The movie abounds with displays of awesome, specially in the world of Oz, and moments that will put a smile on your face. The final parts I was sitting in awe for before finding out that it wasn’t the end and that the next part made me sit even closer to the TV screen with an ending that was making me hold my breath.

Soundtrack was good. I loved the music and it fit so well with the movie rather than just random good bits of music smooshed together to try and create something.

All in all this is a literally epic movie. If you liked ‘The Girl Who Leaped Through Time’ you will love this but if you haven’t seen it or didn’t like it I still recommend you see it I just loved it that much. It has something for everyone and all will enjoy.

Now you read this, thanks and go watch it.

Love lots, Enzedder

Strike Witches sub 3/30/10 FUNimation

Srtike witches comes today in dub! Finally?! I’ve been waiting for the longest time now since the sub wasnt cutting it, hopefully the dubbing wont be horrid & will be good like Fate Stay Night, etc. I expect great things out of this, just like  Spice & Wolf.

Set in a world similar to Earth in the mid twentieth century, Strike Witches tells the story of a fight to protect that world using a combination of magic and technology. The titular Strike Witches are young women with high magical potential who are recruited into militaries around the world to fight against the enigmatic Neuroi, which began an invasion of unprecedented scale on human territory in the year 1939. This puzzling enemy force has appeared frequently and without warning in many areas across the world throughout history. The weapons of the Neuroi mostly take on forms similar to aircraft, but their most troubling tactic is the spreading of a corrosive miasma. Not only do normal humans have no defense against this miasma, but the remnants of the land affected by it are processed by the Neuroi into new weapons, crumbling huge sections of former nations into the sea. As the miasma seems to be unable to spread across large bodies of water, humanity has designated such areas as their main lines of defense.

In order to bring out their potential for use in battle, each Witch equips a unique machine onto their legs: the Striker Unit. With the Striker Unit equipped, they gain the ability to fly and their tapped magical potential provides the strength to utilize weapons far too heavy and powerful for a normal person. Also created is a defensive field that can protect the Witches from the Neuroi’s miasma as well as other physical weaponry, making them humanity’s trump card in the war.”
